Dry Weather Pushes UK and EU Potato Harvests Far Below Expectations

Potato growers across the UK and Europe are bracing for a major production shortfall, with harvests projected to fall 3.5 million tons below expectations. The primary drivers are dry weather, heat stress, and sharply rising input costs, all of which have combined to reduce yields and increase the cost of cultivation and processing.

The summer’s dry conditions and high temperatures have been particularly damaging for potatoes, which require consistent moisture for tuber development. As a result, many fields have produced smaller or fewer potatoes. This deficit—equivalent to roughly 5 kg per person across Europe—comes at a time when consumer demand for potatoes remains stable, setting the stage for higher retail prices this winter. Some consumers may shift toward alternative starches such as oats, barley, beans, and lentils.

Overall, the combination of weather extremes, rising costs, and crop stress is creating a challenging outlook for European vegetable supply heading into winter, with potatoes being one of the most affected crops.
