Ontario Potato Grower Honoured

The Ontario Fruit & Vegetable Growers’ Association (OFVGA) recently honored MP Scot Davidson and Streef Produce Ltd. with the Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Industry Partnership Award during its annual banquet in Niagara Falls on February 18.

Davidson was recognized for his pivotal role in passing Bill C-280, the Financial Protection for Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Farmers Act, which ensures that growers receive payment if a buyer becomes insolvent. His advocacy has been crucial in establishing protections similar to those previously enjoyed under the U.S. Perishable Agricultural Commodities Act (PACA).

Streef Produce Ltd. was awarded for their long-term commitment to the OFVGA’s Fresh from the Farm school fundraising program. They have played a vital role in managing logistics and procurement, especially during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Over the past 12 years, the program has helped over 3,000 schools sell more than five million pounds of Ontario-grown produce, raising over $2.2 million for educational institutions while supporting local farmers.

Alison Robertson, executive director of OFVGA, emphasized the importance of collaboration in the industry and highlighted the significant contributions of both Davidson and Streef Produce. Their efforts not only support growers but also enhance food literacy in schools and create new market opportunities for Ontario farmers.

October 23, 2024 The idea of soil microbes generating electricity is such a fascinating and revolutionary development. The concept of “Bactery,” a soil-powered battery developed by the University of Bath, harnesses the power of electrigens—microbes capable of generating electrons while consuming organic compounds in the soil. This breakthrough has the potential to sustainably power in-field sensors, part of the “Smart Farming” revolution, providing real-time data on soil conditions to support more efficient agricultural practices. Plus, no need for replacing batteries or maintaining solar panels—just install and let nature do the rest.
