UPGC MISSION STATEMENT
The United Potato Growers of Canada is a co-operative organization of Associations and Boards from all provinces except Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. Our mission is to improve the marketing of potatoes via the development of better market information and analysis, and stronger communications and cooperation between grower organizations across the country.
UPGC is a non-share, not-for-profit corporation that has been set up under the Canada Corporations Act. Membership in the corporation has been limited to organizations including marketing boards, agencies, commissions, grower cooperatives, and corporations representing potato growers or whose members are potato growers and are interested in furthering the objects of the corporation and shall consist of those persons whose application for admission as a member has received the approval of the board of directors of the corporation.
In short, UPGC has no statuatory powers beyond what is provided for the act under which it is constituted. It is the provincial potato organizations with their provincial acts and regulations/authorities that hold the regulatory powers or remedies that could be used to address industry issues on a provincial basis. UPGC only gives an organized body that can sit and discuss various aspects of cooperation and sharing of information between its members.
